Mastering Breastfeeding with the Cigarette Method

1. Understanding Why Latch Pain Happens

Latch pain often stems from a shallow or uneven grip on the areola, causing pinching instead of a full, comfortable seal.

New moms may feel raw soreness, cracked nipples, or a sharp pinch with every suckle.

Recognizing that pain is not “just part of breastfeeding” is the first step toward relief.

2. What Is the Cigarette Method?

The Cigarette Method, created by Dr. Nazim Merchant and Dr. Brito in Kissimmee, Florida, compresses the breast above the areola between your pointer and middle fingers—just as though you were holding a slim cigarette (no tobacco involved).

This compression narrows and elongates the nipple-areola complex, guiding your baby’s jaw for a deeper, more comfortable latch.

3. Applying the Technique Step by Step

  1. Properly support baby’s body using a breastfeeding pillow to avoid back pain and ensure relaxation. Do not yet try to support baby solely with your arms.

  2. Position baby tummy-to-tummy so their head and mouth are almost parallel to your nipple, with their body slightly angled downward. Support head and shoulders with one arm.

  3. Compress the areola above the nipple between your pointer and middle fingers, as snugly as possible.

  4. As baby opens wide, maintain that “cigarette” compression—notice how the narrowed breast matches the tiny opening of their mouth.

  5. If needed, graze baby’s cheek with your nipple to trigger the rooting reflex, then quickly bring their mouth to the compressed areola. Don’t worry about discomfort—their flared nostrils allow easy breathing.

  6. Baby’s lips will flange outward and latch deeply onto the areola, drawing the nipple well inside for safe, pain-free feeding.

  7. Relax your shoulders and breathe—enjoy the sweet serenity of nursing your infant.

  8. If the latch feels uncomfortable after about a minute, gently insert a clean finger between baby’s gums to break suction.

  9. Don’t be afraid to try again. Always bring baby to the breast—never pull your breast toward baby.

4. Growing Comfort, Confidence, and Bonding

Once that deep, secure latch is consistent, experiment with holds—football, cradle, or side-lying—to discover what feels best for both of you.

Soothe sensitive nipples with warm compresses or pure lanolin balm, and track your baby’s feeding cues and latch prompts in a nursing journal.

With practice and patience, the Cigarette Method will not only relieve pain but also enhance milk transfer, fostering stronger bonding and thriving infants.
