How to Change a Diaper: Boys and Girls

The most important part of changing a baby's diaper is to be prepared BEFORE getting Started! ❤️

Prepare Supplies As Needed:

  • A fresh clean diaper ready like a warm hug.

  • Gentle baby wipes or a soft, damp and warm cloth to cleanse tender skin without irritation.

  • Soothing diaper rash cream, A&D ointment, Aquaphor Baby cream, Vaseline, Cornstarch or other medium offering a layer of protection from the diapered environment.

  • Lay down a wipeable changing mat or a soft, clean towel to ensure your baby feels safe and surface or table is protected.

  • Mobile for younger babies and a toy for older children to keep eyes and hands busy.

  • A change of clothing if needed.

  • A bag for dirty diaper.

  • Wash your hands.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Prepare the Area: Lay your little one gently on a clean, soft surface. Arrange all supplies within arm’s reach, so your full attention can be on your baby’s needs. Be ready to put a steady hand on baby.

  2. Remove the Dirty Diaper: Unfasten the diaper slowly, anticipating any sudden wiggles or giggles. Lift your baby’s legs gently by the ankles, ensuring smooth movements. Use the front of the diaper to wipe away any mess, maintaining gentle touch.

  3. Clean with Care: Using a wipe or soft warm cloth, clean your baby’s skin from front to back in smooth, gentle strokes. Speak or sing softly.

  4. Clean every tiny fold and crease: For boys under the scrotum. For girls inside the labia folds gently wiping downwards from front to back.

  5. Let the Skin Breathe: Allow your baby’s skin to air dry for a few moments, letting the fresh air caress their delicate skin—this helps prevent irritation and diaper rash.

  6. Apply Cream or Powder: If needed, apply a thin medium with soft, loving strokes, ensuring your baby’s skin is protected and comfortable.

  7. Secure the Clean Diaper: Lift baby by legs / ankles and slide a fresh diaper underneath your baby’s bottom. Ensure the back of diaper sits slightly higher than the front. Pull the front panel up and fasten the sides snugly, creating a secure yet but gentle fit that keeps your baby happy.

  8. Check for Comfort: Ensure the diaper fits well without pinching tiny legs or soft belly. Finish with a warm smile and a loving word—it turns this everyday task into a cherished moment of connection.

For Baby Boys:

  • Always point the penis downward before closing the diaper to help prevent leaks.

  • Be prepared—boys sometimes urinate when exposed to cool air. Cover the area with a wipe or cloth after removing diaper to avoid surprises.

For Baby Girls:

  • Always wipe from front to back to help prevent infections.

  • Clean gently but thoroughly, paying special attention to every fold and crease to ensure freshness and comfort.

Safety and Love:

  • Never leave your baby unattended during diaper changes—even for a moment.

  • Be ready to keep one hand on baby to stop rolling.

  • Dispose of the soiled diaper promptly and wash your hands before and after diaper changes thoroughly to prevent spreading of germs.

  • Take a moment to cuddle, kiss, or speak to your baby— Make eye contact. Transform this routine task into a moment of bonding and reassurance.

Enjoy your fresh clean baby! 💕💙❤️
