10 Must-Have Items for Moms Giving Birth
Preparing for your baby’s arrival is an exciting but overwhelming experience. One of the best ways to feel ready is by packing the right essentials for your hospital stay. Whether you’re a first-time mom or a seasoned pro, these 10 must-have items will help make your birth and postpartum recovery more comfortable and stress-free.
1. Hospital Bag Essentials
Before heading to the hospital, pack your bag with everything you’ll need for labor, delivery, and your stay. Think of it as your survival kit! Essentials include:
Loose-fitting, nursing-friendly clothes, stretchy pants and sweaters.
Non-slip socks or slippers
Toiletries like a toothbrush, deodorant, hairbrush, and lip balm, hair ties etc.
Soft cozy blankets from home to counter the cool of the hospital.
Breastfeeding pillow to support baby and keep Mom free from back pain.
These small comforts will make a world of difference.
2. Postpartum Pads or Adult Diapers
Postpartum bleeding (also called lochia) can be heavier than a typical period, so heavy-duty protection is a must. Stock up on postpartum pads or consider using adult diapers for maximum comfort and absorbency.
3. Nursing Bras and Breast Pads
If you plan to breastfeed, nursing bras are a game changer. They offer easy access and extra support while keeping you comfortable. Don’t forget to pack breast pads to prevent leaks!
4. Peri Bottle
This little water bottle will be your best friend during postpartum recovery. It helps soothe and clean sensitive areas after birth. Many moms prefer an angled peri bottle for easier use.
5. Comfortable Underwear (High-Waisted or Disposable)
Say goodbye to your favorite underwear for a little while. High-waisted or disposable options are ideal for postpartum recovery, especially if you’ve had a C-section.
6. Nipple Cream
Breastfeeding can be tough at first, and sore or cracked nipples are common. A good nipple cream will soothe and protect your skin right from the start, making breastfeeding more comfortable. Lanolin is a great product recommendation.
7. Water Bottle and Snacks
Labor and postpartum recovery require energy and hydration. An insulated water bottle and some healthy snacks will keep you feeling refreshed and nourished. Honey sticks are quick energy when you need it most.
8. Phone Charger (Extra Long Cord)
You’ll want your phone nearby to capture those precious first moments and keep loved ones updated. An extra-long charging cord makes it easy to charge your phone from the hospital bed.
9. Pain relieving spray postpartum
Dermoplast Postpartum 2.70oz spray is our recommendation. Relieves pain, burning and discomfort. Cools and comforts with soothing aloe and lanolin. Soothing comfort for after birth discomforts.
Cooling gel pads for sore nipples (and bottoms)
Hemorrhoid cream if needed.
Pain relievers (Safe for breastfeeding)
Medical supplies are a must after birth.
10. Baby Gear for Leaving the Hospital
Before you head home, make sure you have these essentials ready:
A properly installed car seat
A neck cushion if needed for babies car seat/head support
A going-home outfit for your baby
Large soft blankets to protect baby and mom from outside
Baby mittens to protect the face from their little scratches (If needed)
Bonus Tip: Prepare in Advance!
Pack your hospital bag by 36 weeks to avoid last-minute stress. These items will help ensure you’re comfortable, well-prepared, and ready to meet your new baby.
